I'M AN AUNTIE
My best friend had her baby this weekend. I repeat... my best friend had her baby! I'm not really sure when life happened and now I'm at the age that my best friend is having children, but I'm not complaining. Y'all, I'M AN AUNTIE!!
This past weekend I witnessed a new chapter begin for my best friend and her husband. I mean, I literally watched the pages turn as they transitioned from just being married to becoming parents for the very first time. And oh, was it magical.
This post is dedicated to Sarah and Michael, who have blessed me with the greatest gift - being an aunt to their precious Maddox.
I remember the day so vividly when my best friend called to tell me she was pregnant with you. The day she told me I was going to be an Auntie for the very first time. I was out of town and she called me out of the blue. Now don’t get me wrong, your mother and I talk all day, every single day. But there was something different about this phone call. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but as soon as I answered the phone I knew. And we were squealing and crying and laughing and celebrating the gift of a little bitty Peanut (that’s you!). Every day since then, I have been waiting anxiously to meet you. Listening to your mother tell me stories about the party you were having in her tummy, organizing your tribal themed nursery and unrolling and refolding the tiniest diapers that couldn’t possibly fit any human’s bottom! You had me wrapped around your little fingers before I even met you.
And just like that phone call the day your momma told me about you, I received a text at 2:05 PM last Saturday. Your mom told me to hang out and she would keep me posted if it was the day, but I already knew. And six and a half hours later, on Saturday, March 25th at 8:34 PM, I finally got to meet you. Oh Maddox….the love I thought I had for you was nothing compared to the love that engulfed my heart the moment I held you in my arms.
You are so blessed to have been born to the best parents I know (besides my own, hi Deb & Kit). Your mom and dad will go to the ends of the earth for you. And I know as you get older you’ll stomp your feet and throw a tantrum because they are being “just so unfair!” But I promise you, every single thing that your mother and father do from the day you were born onward is to protect you, care for you, and love you with all of their hearts.
How do I know this? Because I got to stand by your mommy as she delivered you into this world and watch your daddy as he put your first diaper on after the nurse cleaned you up. And also because Auntie Sam says so. I stood back and watched as they looked at you, talked to you, and held you. The love that filled the room, the love they have for you… Maddox, I can’t even put it into words. It was overwhelming. It still takes my breath away today as I write this letter to you.
I promise to be the coolest Aunt of all the land. Well, besides Aunt Danda, because she’s pretty awesome, too. I promise to pick you up when you fall down, kiss your boo-boos that are bound to happen (I mean, have you met your mother? I’m pretty sure she gets her clumsiness from me. Or I from her. Either way, you’re kinda stuck. Sorry bud.) I promise to do a better job of having band-aids on hand.
I promise to laugh with you, cry with you, and have random dance parties with you. And when you get too cool for dance parties, I promise to embarrass you with them anyways.
I’m always running around like a mad-woman, but I will never be too busy for you. I promise to make it to your pee-wee football games by at least half-time. You’ll know I’m there because your friends will point out the crazy one at the end of the bleachers with a sign, megaphone, and pom-poms. And I promise not to be offended when you roll your eyes and pretend you don't know me. Just remember Maddox, it’s all out of love!
I promise to guard you, challenge you and empower you to chase your wildest dreams. The world is yours to take and there is nothing too great for you to accomplish.
But most of all, I promise to love you always.
Thank you for blessing me with the greatest gift – thank you for making me your Auntie.
